Spray Tanning FAQs

Confused with what shade to spray your client in? Or maybe you’re new to spray tanning and you don’t know what to buy! Not to worry this is your guide to all things Naked Tan!

Before every spray tan it is essential you are colour consulting with your client, this means taking the time to assess their skin tone and their wants and needs.

At Naked Tan we have a shade for every skin tone, using the Fitzpatrick skin type chart we are able to determine the appropriate colour for your spray tan treatment.

Knowing how often, and how to clean your spray tan gun can be difficult here are our top tips on keeping your spray tan equipment FRESH!

You do not need to wash out your cup after every spray tan. If you are someone who washes their cup out after every spray babe, you are wasting your time!
You should be rinsing your cup out at the end of each day with warm water. Washing in between clients is risky as your cup still may be wet when you pour in the solution, this will cause your solution to go green!

At the end of each spray tanning fill your cup up with warm water and some mentholated spirits. Attach your cup to the spray tan gun and plug in your machine as if you are about to do a spray tan. Point your gun into a sink and spray your gun flushing out the warm water. This will remove any leftover sticky solution from your gun.

Always leave your gun out over night to dry in a warm area. We also recommend pointing your hose into the gun, the air from your hose will assist in drying out your gun. Never leave your gun sitting in a cup of solution overnight. The Naked Tan Solution is made of essential oils, if left over night the sticky solution will get trapped in the nossle of your gun.

Spray Tan Solution

Naked Tan solutions do not contain alcohol or parabens and are formulated with organic and natural ingredients so it’s quiet uncommon for anyone to have an allergic reaction to the Naked Tan solutions. However we do need to be aware that people can have allergies to even natural ingredients so if they are concerned you should always refer them to a qualified medical professional who can asses this for them. Naked Tan can provide you with a copy of the Material Safety Data sheet so the client can take this along to their GP with them. Like all professional treatments it is always recommended that salons carry out a patch test with new customers 24 – 48 hours before their treatment.

If the tanning solution looks green, rather than brown, it means something has happened to affect the natural colours in the solution.

If the client has traces of any products on the skin (deodorant, perfume, moisturiser) If the spray tan comes into contact with this product it can turn the bronzers in the solution to an off green colour on the skin.

Expiry – All Naked Tan solutions have a 12 month shelf life due to the active and natural ingredients. Manufacturing date is on the bottle. After this time the active ingredients and colour will begin to diminish. The solution must be used within 9 months of opening. There are 20 spray tan applications in a bottle of Naked Tan. An average business will use a 1 bottle within 3months.

Storage – Due to the active and natural ingredients, Naked Tan solutions must be stored below 25 degrees at ALL times. Best stored in the fridge over Summer time. Excessive temperatures will affect the active ingredients and also the bronzer colours. Solution stored incorrectly may result in  a change in the products colour and could result in under developed spray tan results..

Water – It is important to ensure that at no time does your Naked Tan solution come into contact with water. Water will contaminate the product, preventing it from developing and may also cause discolouration causing the product to turn green. The main reason the solution may come into contact with water is through the spray tan gun, it’s important that guns are completely dry before use. Even the smallest trace of water in the gun can contaminate the product. If this product is then poured from the gun back into the bottle it will contaminate the bottle. Always double check guns are dry before use by blowing air through them after cleaning and before the next spray tan.

A ‘patchy’ or 'streaky' result will relate to the individuals skin condition and not the product. The PH of the individual’s skin can affect how the tan develops, the length of time the tan has been left on the skin before showering will also impact. If the client has any dry areas of skin, or has not exfoliated prior to their tan, the tanning solution can grab to these dry areas leaving these area’s looking darker. To rectify this you can suggest the client exfoliate and moisturise the area and come back the following day for a very light spray to help even out the colour but you will not be able to even out completely.

An Individuals Skin– Any changes in the PH of the client’s skin may prevent the tan from developing as it normally would, in particular hormonal changes or medications can alter PH levels.  Clients should always arrive for their tan with clean, dry skin. A good tip is to offer a towel to freshen up before their spray tan if it’s a warm day and their skin feels warm and clammy.

Before & After Care– It’s important to educate your clients on before and after care for their tan as it can have a dramatic effect on the results achieved. You can refer clients to the Naked Tan ‘Tanning Tip flyers’ BEFORE: To ensure a tan that develops evenly the client should exfoliate and moisturise 12 to 24 hours before their tan. On the day of the tan ensure your client has not applied anything to their skin or had any other treatments such as waxing or massage which may leave a residue on the skin and create a barrier for their tan. AFTER: All Naked Tan solutions are true 2 hours tans so should be showered 2 hours after application (never longer than 4 hours) with an SLS free body wash, and always moisturise using the Goddess Crème de la Crème. After showering the tan will continue to develop for another 12 hours on the skin. Always recommend the Retail Range to help maintain your clients tan and ensure the get the best result from their treatment.

If the product appears to be running on the skin it maybe that too much product has been applied. This can be due to the spray gun being held too close to the skin, or the spray tan gun is being used on too high a setting. Please refer to:

Application– Naked Tan recommend 50mls of tanning solution per full body spray tan, this is on an average body size. Too little solution and the tan will not develop as expected, too much will leave the client feeling sticky and wet and the tan may over develop. Tanning equipment will vary but Naked Tan solutions should always be applied in one fine coat and you should be getting 20 tans per litre of solution. If you find you are getting more, or less, you may need to review how the tan is being applied and the settings that are being used on your equipment. Always remind their customer that the bronzer should be showered off after 2 hours, maximum 5, but the tan will continue to develop for up to another 12 hours depending. It is only after this time that clients may see their full development so a client should never be resprayed within this time frame.

There are many things that can affect a tans development. First check that feedback has been received from more than one customer as individual skin types vary, then carry out a patch test. If the product does not develop during patch test refer to the below topics:

1. Product Freshness:
Naked Tan solutions have a 12-month shelf life due to their active, natural ingredients. To ensure the best results, use solutions within 9 months of opening. With 20 applications per litre, most salons will use a bottle within 1-2 months.

3. Correct Application:
For a flawless tan, use 50ml of solution per full body application. Using too little may result in poor development, while too much can leave the client sticky and cause overdevelopment. You should get 20 tans from 1 litre of solution. If your results differ, review your application method and equipment settings. Remind clients to rinse off the bronzer after 2 hours (4 hours max) and allow up to 12 hours for full tan development.

4. Proper Storage:
Always store Naked Tan solutions below 25°C, ideally in the fridge during warmer months. Exposure to excessive heat can compromise the active ingredients and natural color, affecting the tan's development.

5. Avoid Water Contamination:
Ensure that your solution never comes into contact with water, as it can cause discoloration and hinder development. Always check that spray tan guns are completely dry before use to avoid contamination.

6. Development Timing:
Naked Tan solutions are designed as true 2-hour tans. Clients should shower off the bronzer 2 hours after application (no more than 4 hours) using an SLS-free body wash. The tan will continue to develop over the next 12 hours. Clients should avoid water and excessive sweating during the initial 2-hour period and wear loose, dark clothing.

7. Skin Factors:
Changes in skin pH, hormones, or medications can affect how a tan develops. Residual products like deodorant, perfume, or moisturizers can cause discoloration or prevent the tan from developing properly. Clients should arrive with clean, dry skin.

8. Before & After Care:
Educate your clients on proper before and after care to ensure the best results. Encourage exfoliation and moisturizing 12-24 hours before the tan, and remind clients to avoid applying anything to their skin on the day of the tan. After the tan, recommend an SLS-free body wash and regular moisturizing with Goddess Crème de la Crème for optimal results.

Certain areas of the body are typically dryer, i.e. hands, elbows, knees and feet. As part of the Naked Tan experience the therapist should always apply a small amount of Goddess Crème de la Crème to hands, elbows, knees and feet prior to the spray tan to moisturise the area and avoid build up of tan. Before they come for their spray tan you should also recommend that clients exfoliate their entire body to remove dry skin, paying particular attention to these drier areas. Never spray the hands and feet with the same amount of product as the rest of the body, always pull the spray gun further away so only a fine mist falls on these areas for a natural result.

If the above has not been done and the tan has grabbed to dry skin in these areas recommend the client exfoliate the areas to reduce the colour more quickly.

With the right care, your Naked Tan spray tan should last 7-10 days. However, factors like swimming, sweating, and exfoliating activities can cause the tan to fade faster. If you're noticing quicker fading, consider the following:

1. Product Freshness:
Naked Tan solutions have a 12-month shelf life due to their natural, active ingredients. For the best results, use solutions within 9 months of opening to ensure freshness. With 20 applications per litre, most salons will use a bottle within 1-2 months.

2. Before & After Care:
Educating clients on proper before and after care is essential for long-lasting results.

  • Before: Clients should exfoliate and moisturize 12-24 hours before their tan. On the day of the tan, ensure they haven't applied anything to their skin or undergone treatments like waxing or massage, which can leave residues and create barriers.
  • After: Naked Tan solutions are true 2-hour tans. Clients should shower 2 hours after application (never more than 4 hours) with an SLS-free body wash and moisturize with Goddess Crème de la Crème. The tan will continue to develop for up to 12 hours after showering. Recommend the Goddess Retail Range to help maintain their tan.

3. Proper Application:
For an even tan, use 50ml of solution per full body application. Using too little can hinder development, while too much can make the client feel sticky and cause overdevelopment. You should get 20 tans per litre. If results vary, review your application technique and equipment settings. Remind clients to shower off the bronzer after 2 hours, and never respray within 12 hours of the initial tan.

4. Skin Factors:
Changes in skin pH, hormones, or medications can affect how the tan develops. Residual products on the skin (like deodorant or perfume) can cause discoloration or prevent proper development. Clients should arrive with clean, dry skin. On warm days, offer a towel so clients can freshen up before their spray tan if their skin feels warm or clammy.

5. Proper Storage:
Store Naked Tan solutions below 25°C, ideally in the fridge during warmer months. High temperatures can degrade the active ingredients and natural colors, impacting tan development.

6. Avoid Water Contamination:
Ensure the solution never comes into contact with water, as it can cause discoloration and prevent development. Make sure spray tan guns are completely dry before use to avoid contaminating the solution.

Spray Tan Machine

If you find product or water are leaking/dripping from your gun during treatment it may be due to the following:

Gun not dried correctly before use – always shake gun before screwing on the cup to ensure there is absolutely no trace of water inside the gun. Also ensure cup is dry.

Too much product filled in the cup- never fill the cup more than half way, refill the cup if needed.

The machine or gun has been used on too high a setting- this creates too much pressure in the cup. The maximum recommended setting for both your machine and gun is 3- 5. This can also be reduced depending on experience and speed of the spray tanner.

Tilting the gun too far during tanning– to ensure an even spray tan the gun should be kept as upright as possible throughout the spray tan. An area where people often find the tilt the gun at an extreme angle is at the feet, however the feet do not need to be sprayed directly. When you reach the angle, pull the gun away from the client’s body and overspray will fall on the feet to give a more subtle, natural looking result.

If you find the tanning solution is coming out unevenly on the clients skin, and it is not relating to the clients skin or preparation routine, it may be due to the following:

Gun not dried correctly before usealways shake gun before screwing on the cup to ensure there is absolutely no trace of water inside the gun. Also ensure cup is fully dry.

Incorrect setting on the gun or machinealways ensure the gun and machine are used on a setting no higher than 4. Check that the dial on the gun is set on a full number, if it is set in between numbers you will not get an even spray as it is not set correctly and the nozzle will be slightly closed.

Blockage or dirt in the gun An obstruction or buildup of old solution within the gun will cause an uneven spray. Follow the cleaning and drying instructions for your gun. Guns should be cleaned at the end of each day to ensure no buildup of solution.

Blocked machine filterIf the machine filter is not cleaned regularly it will become blocked and prevent even air flow through the machine. To avoid this, ensure your machine filter is cleaned at least once a week, and more regularly if you complete a high number of spray tans daily.

We guarantee that this spray tanning system is in accordance with the statutory regulations. A guarantee of 1 year will be warranted against faulty workmanship and material with the proof of purchase by invoice or delivery note.
