Addressing Common Self-Tanning Mistakes (And How to Fix Them!)

Self-tanning is one of the fastest ways to feel confident, glowy, and bronzed — without the sun damage. But even seasoned tanners can experience the occasional streak, patch, or uneven fade. At Naked Tan, we believe that a flawless glow is all in the details. With a little prep and the right product choices, your tan can look like it was done by a pro (because it kind of was — thanks to you!). Below, we break down the most common self-tanning mistakes, how to avoid them, and what to do if something goes wrong.

1. Not Prepping Your Skin Properly

The problem: Uneven texture, dry patches and leftover tan = streaky results.
The fix: Prep is everything! Always exfoliate 24 hours before applying your tan. Use a mitt or exfoliating scrub to buff away dry skin and old product. Focus on areas like elbows, knees, ankles and wrists where skin is thicker or rougher.

👉 Try: Naked Tan Exfoliator or Exfoliating Mitt for an even, fresh base.

2. Shaving or Waxing After Tanning

The problem: “Strawberry legs” (dark spots) or patchy tan fade.
The fix: Always shave or wax at least 24 hours before tanning. This gives your skin time to calm and your pores time to close. Applying tan to freshly shaved legs can clog open follicles and cause that speckled look.

✨ Pro tip: Rinse with cool water before applying tan to tighten pores even more.

3. Skipping the Patch Test

The problem: Unexpected irritation, breakouts or allergic reactions.
The fix: Even though all Naked Tan products are paraben-free, alcohol-free and vegan, patch testing is essential — especially if you have sensitive skin. Apply a small amount to your inner wrist or behind your ear and wait 24 hours.

4. Applying Tan with Bare Hands

The problem: Stained palms and uneven coverage.
The fix: Use a tanning mitt for smooth, streak-free application and to protect your hands. To tan the backs of your hands, use leftover product on the mitt and gently sweep it over at the end.

👉 Use the Naked Tan Tanning Mitt for a pro finish.

5. Applying Too Much to Dry Areas

The problem: Patchy or overly dark areas on elbows, knees and feet.
The fix: These areas soak up more product due to their dry texture. Apply a light layer of moisturiser to these spots just before tanning to prevent over-absorption.

👉 Use Crème de la Crème to balance hydration levels.

6. Wearing Tight Clothes Too Soon

The problem: Tan rubs off unevenly before it sets.
The fix: Wear loose, dark clothing and avoid tight waistbands, bras or jeans until after your first rinse. Also avoid sweating during this time.

👉 For a quick tan, opt for our 2 Hour Tanning Mousse — perfect for busy days!

7. Moisturising Too Soon After the First Rinse

The problem: Moisturising straight after rinsing can block DHA from fully developing.
The fix: Wait 24 hours after your first rinse before applying any lotion. Once you hit the 24-hour mark, moisturise daily to extend your glow.

👉 Use Gradual Glow Lotion to top up and lock in hydration.

8. Wearing Perfume or Deodorant Before Tanning

The problem: Products create a barrier, leading to patchy or uneven development.
The fix: Apply tan to clean, product-free skin. Skip the deodorant and perfume until after your first rinse.

9. Forgetting Your Face

The problem: Your face doesn’t match the rest of your tan — or worse, it breaks out.
The fix: Use a product specifically designed for facial tanning. These formulas are lighter and non-comedogenic.

👉 Try: Naked Tan Face Tan Mist for a natural, buildable glow.

10. Not Following Post-Tan Guidelines

Getting the tan is one thing. Keeping it is another! Follow these steps to ensure it lasts as long (and evenly) as possible:

Post-Tan Care Checklist

  • After tanning: Wait the full 2-hour development time (or as directed on your product) before rinsing.

  • First rinse: Use lukewarm water only — no soap, no scrubbing. Pat your skin dry gently with a towel.

  • Wait 24 hours after your rinse before applying any moisturiser, Gradual Tan, or oils.

  • Avoid exercise, sweating, or swimming for 12–24 hours post-tan to prevent streaking.

  • Moisturise daily (after the 24-hour window) to keep your skin hydrated and your tan looking fresh.

  • Exfoliate gently after day 5 or 6 to encourage even fading and avoid patchiness.

Tanning mistakes are totally normal — but they don’t need to ruin your glow. With the right prep, timing, and care, you can achieve a flawless, long-lasting tan every time. Whether you're new to self-tanning or a seasoned pro, the Naked Tan range has everything you need to tan smarter and glow longer.
