Why You Shouldn't Moisturise Straight After Your First Rinse

When you’ve just rinsed off your fresh spray tan or self tan, the natural instinct is to reach for your favourite moisturiser and lock in that glow. But hold that thought! While moisturising is key to a long-lasting, even tan, doing it too soon can interfere with your tan’s full development.

At Naked Tan, we’re all about helping you glow smarter. In this blog, we’ll explain why skipping moisturiser right after your first rinse is crucial — and when you should start hydrating for best results, all backed by skin science.

Understanding the Tan Development Process

Most tans, including Naked Tan’s spray and self tan formulas, use DHA (dihydroxyacetone) — a naturally derived, colourless sugar compound. DHA works through a process known as the Maillard reaction, where it reacts with the amino acids in the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of your skin). This non-enzymatic browning effect produces melanoidin pigments, which give the appearance of a golden tan.

This reaction doesn’t stop the moment you rinse off. In fact, your tan continues to develop for up to 12–24 hours post-application, even after the initial guide colour has been rinsed away. The depth and tone of the tan continue to evolve during this period.

Why You Shouldn’t Moisturise Right After the Rinse

1. Moisturiser Can Interfere with Tan Development

Moisturisers form a semi-occlusive layer on the skin, which can affect oxygen flow and pH levels — both of which influence DHA’s reactivity. This barrier can disrupt the Maillard reaction by diluting the remaining DHA or altering skin’s acidity, resulting in:

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Lighter or patchy areas

  • A compromised overall finish

2. Some Ingredients Can Alter the Tan’s Tone

Many moisturisers contain emollients like mineral oils, alcohols, or silicones, which can either break down DHA or cause premature exfoliation. Additionally, preservatives and perfumes can alter the skin’s surface chemistry, potentially shifting the tone of your developing tan toward orange or green hues.

What You Should Do Instead

After your first rinse (which usually takes place 2–4 hours or 20 minutes after application depending on your Naked Tan formula):

  • Use lukewarm water only — no soap, body wash, or scrubs. Soaps are alkaline and can neutralise skin pH, slowing DHA development.

  • Pat dry gently with a towel — don’t rub, as this can physically disturb the melanoidin formation on the skin’s surface.

  • Wait at least 8–12 hours before moisturising. This gives your skin’s surface time to stabilise and complete the tanning reaction.

When to Start Moisturising

After the tan has fully developed, moisturising becomes essential. Hydration supports the structural integrity of the stratum corneum, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and preventing uneven fading.

Use a tan-friendly moisturiser like:

  • Naked Tan Crème de la Crème — deeply hydrating, non-greasy, and designed to work in harmony with our tanning solutions. It supports skin barrier function without disrupting melanoidin pigments.

  • Avoid anything with AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), or retinol, which promote cellular turnover and can strip the tan prematurely.

Moisturise morning and night from day two onwards to keep your skin glowing, soft, and your tan even.

Quick Summary: Tan + Moisturiser Timeline

Step Action
Before Tanning Exfoliate and keep skin clean — no moisturiser on the day of application
After Tanning Let tan develop as instructed (20 min / 2 hr / 8 hr)
First Rinse Use lukewarm water only — NO soap or moisturiser
8–12 Hours After Rinse Tan fully develops — now you can start moisturising
Ongoing Care Moisturise daily to maintain and prolong your glow

It’s tempting to treat your skin after a rinse, but timing is everything when it comes to tanning. By skipping moisturiser straight after your first rinse and giving your skin the space it needs to develop, you’re supporting the Maillard reaction and letting your glow mature properly.

Glow smarter. Glow longer. Glow with Naked Tan.
