Getting your very first spray tan might make you feel a little bit nervous, which is completely normal, but with these few helpful hints the whole spray tan process will seem like a breeze! We’re here to help you get prepared and know that with our top tips you will leave your appointment feeling like the confident bronzed goddess you are!
- How to prepare: It is important to wax, shave and exfoliate 24 hours before you arrive. If you shave or shower before your spray tan, the tan might enter open pores causing a spotty effect. Avoid body lotions and do not shampoo and condition your hair the day of your appointment, these products can stop your tan from developing.
- On the day: Arrive with clean skin free from moisturiser and deodorant. We also recommend wearing dark loose fitted cotton clothing. When first arriving, your tan therapist will greet and colour consult you. At this time you have the chance to discuss how dark you would like to be and show any reference pics. Here at Naked Tan, we have 8 shades to choose from!
- In the tanning room: The tan therapist will take you inside the tanning room where you will get ready for your first spray tan. You will undress to what you are comfortable with. We do recommend stripping all the way down and leaving your undies on, however you are welcome to go fully nude or keep a bra on. The therapist will provide you with a disposable G-string and a hair net and will give you some privacy to undress while they mix your desired colour.

The tanning process: A good tan therapist will apply moisturiser to dry areas such as hands, elbows, knees and feet before beginning the tan. Our staff are trained the Naked Tan way, however each therapist will have their own unique way of spraying. We start off with your legs first, then turn to the back, then your front half and face last. Naked Tan solutions are quick drying so once you turn around, you’ll already be dry!
Helpful Hint: There is no need to move your body around while getting your tan, all you must do is stand there and the tan therapist will tell you exactly what to do and when to do it!
- After the spray tan is complete: Once your tan therapist is done giving you a spray tan for the first time, she will then dry you off and you can then get dressed. Don’t stress if any tan transfers to your clothes, it won’t stain and will come off in the washing machine! Remember to stay dry and don’t go near water once you have your tan on.

After your appointment: You might think you look ridiculous and really dark the first time you get a spray tan but don’t stress – this is just the bronzer which will wash off in the shower and develop to your desired shade. You’ve rinsed off and think “Omg my tan is completely gone!” Not to worry, this is just the bronzer that has washed off. The bronzer is added to our solutions to allows tan therapists to see where they are spraying. The active ingredient DHA is actually clear! Naked Tan solutions are 2 hours wash and wear, so we recommend booking your appointment so you have time to shower 2 hours later. Now simply wait 18 hours for the colour to fully develop and you’re a bronzed goddess!
Helpful Hint: Our Naked Tan Solutions do not need to be left on for more than 2 hours! However, if you wish to achieve a slightly darker effect, you can leave the tan on for up to 5 hours. No longer than this though, as it can affect the way the tan develops.
